Architectural Photography

Last Tuesday I went to philly to photograph the Philadelphia Free library, this was particularly interesting to me because it was the first time I got to photograph an old building with a lot of details and got to put the 17mm tilt shift lens and the 5D to the test (really testing me as I have not used it a lot). Some of the larger photographs were taken with 3 different exposures then merged in to a high dynamic range image (HDRI) then photo merged to get super wide shot, so basically those photos are made of 6 different photos, did it work? I don’t know you be the judge. only the reading rooms and the grand stairs were done like that, the rest of the photos are a single exposure with a 24-105 zoom lens and my 7D. It was also a very interesting day as it was the day when I was boarding my flight back to Boston there was an 5.8 magnitude earthquake. Enjoy and Comment!!

  1. The BW treatment works wonderfully. The HDRI looks great, though the available resolution’s not so outstanding to see them in detail. However, there’s a big difference between the detail photos and the ones of the reading rooms – I though HDRI was mostly used for color photos…?
You have some great pictures here!

    1. Thanks a lot for your comments, I would start uploading bigger images form now on ;). about the HDRI’s to be honest with you I only did it as an experiment shooting 3 different exposures and blending them in photoshop with the HDR application. Did I do it right? I dont know and it does not matter, I personally think what matters is if we like the result and the learning you get form it. Next time I will try shooting more exposures to see what difference it makes. lastly I just made them BW for fun I though the original colors of the place were not very nice so I just got rid of it :).

take a look at the other posts in there and comment
      thanks, Carlos Cristerna

  2. I’m afaid I’m not at all an expert to judge the method – just giving an unlearned opinion on the result…! I’ve seen HDRI pictures, but I’ve never tried to do it myself – thence the question. Your pictures do look very well balanced in terms of light; maybe the BW strategy really helps to their clean ‘look’ as well πŸ™‚
Anyway, I do appreciate your posts and will definitely return to your blog and comment πŸ™‚
